The first thing to do is tell the person in charge on the job site—the supervisor. They have the authority to stop work right away and arrange the immediate corrective steps to fix the hazard. Keeping this notification within the site’s chain of command helps ensure the problem is addressed quickly and documented properly. OSHA becomes involved if the hazard isn’t corrected after the supervisor is notified, or if the situation requires formal reporting (for example, a serious incident or fatality). So while OSHA or the client may be informed as part of the overall process, the immediate, first contact is the supervisor who can take direct action on site. If the danger is imminent, stop work and evacuate as needed, then notify the supervisor so they can coordinate the response and document what happened.
